VLASOV DAY

St. Vlasii is the guardian of livestock. He is the shepherd of oxen and sheep.

On this day the animals are taken to a watering hole. Their mangers and bodies are cleaned. Women bake a special bread and give it to their neighbors. Men fight with each other and often organize cart races.

In the village of Perushtitsa farmers sacrifice an animal.

It is believed that the holiday originates from the pagan notions associated with the Slavic god called Veles or Volos who is the lord of forests, wild cattle and nature.
