ST.NICHOLAS’ DAY

St. Nicholas is revered as the lord of the sea, rivers and lakes. He is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. He causes storms and hurricanes, sets free the cold winds, shakes up the waters and sinks down boats and ships. That is why sailors and their families partake in a solemn church liturgy on this day, after which they prepare large communal festive meals.

Fish is a must on this day. Carp is the choice of preference usually, and it is customary for women to keep a bone from the carp’s head, which looks like a cross (and is considered exraordinary).
