ST. GEORGE’S DAY
St. George The Victorious lived in Cappadocia (284-305 A.C.). He had enviable abilities as a soldier. He was tortured and killed because of his Christian faith.
Legend has it that a dragon appeared around his grave and ravaged the area. The saint managed to defeat the dragon and has, therefore, since been portrayed as a dragon fighter.
In his honor, each house slaughters and sacrifices the first born white lamb.
The morning dew on this day is considered very healing and young women wash their faces with it. They sit on swings hanging on young saplings.
On this day old agreements are renewed and new ones are drawn out with assistant masters, apprentices, shepherds, goatherds and laborours..
The saint is a patron of the Bulgarian army.
