ST. DEMETRIUS’ DAY
To Bulgarians St. Demetrius’ Day is a holiday of special significance which stems from the fact that the year is divided into 2 main seasons: the winter season and the summer season. This division is marked by the holidays of St. Demetrius and St. George.
A well-known proverb says that St. Demetrius brings winter, while St. George brings summer.
Village gatherings and sacrifices are often organized on St. Demetrius’ Day, and numerous engagements and weddings are being held. A traditional girls-only folk dance is performed in front of the eyes of bachelors and parents. This is how adults would choose their daughters-in-law in the past.
