SIRNI ZAGOVEZNI

The event takes place during the first week of the Easter fast, during which the consumption of butter, cheese and eggs is allowed.

Cheese Sunday is a day when the newly-weds visit their godparents and their elderly parents. They kiss their hands and ask for forgiveness.

Before sitting down at the table, they must have all reconciled and forgiven each other.

The little ones are looking forward to the traditional ritual “hamkane” (consumption) of halva, of a piece of cheese or of a boiled egg. Tied to a long, red woolen thread, the piece of food is swung around, and the children sitting in a circle, with their hands behind their backs, have to bite the piece only by using their mouths.

The bachelors and bachelorettes gather branches and wood all week long and light fires that they must jump over. The race is won by the tallest dome of wood.
