ST. ANDREW’S DAY
This national holiday is associated with several superstitions. The day wakes up and begins to grow in size. That’s why they call this day “Edrey” or “Edrinden” which stands for “The Growing Day”. It barely grows, just by as much as a needle’s tip or a millet, wheat, poppy or mustard grain. The sun moves as much as a “chicken in an egg” does. And yet, the sun does indeed get bigger, and, unnoticeably but surely, turns to spring. That is why the rituals aim to ensure the fertility of the upcoming year.
