"Bash vinar" - the Veliki Preslav wine competition

The wine competition in Veliki Preslav is an annual event that attracts winemakers and wine enthusiasts from all over Bulgaria. It is organized as part of the "Festival of Wine," which usually takes place in early February, coinciding with Trifon Zarezan (14.02) – the traditional Bulgarian holiday dedicated to vine growers and winemakers.

The competition is open to both amateur winemakers and professional wineries, who present their products in various categories. The main categories typically include red, white, and rosé wines. The judging panel usually consists of experienced enologists and experts in winemaking. Wines are evaluated based on criteria such as taste, aroma, color, and overall impression.

The event not only promotes local wine production but also provides an opportunity for participants to exchange experiences and knowledge. The Festival of Wine in Veliki Preslav has a long-standing tradition and is an important part of the region's cultural life.

March 3rd

The reenactment for March 3rd in Preslav is one of the many events organized in Bulgaria to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878, which laid the foundation for the reestablishment of the Bulgarian state after nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule.

In Preslav, the reenactment aims to recreate historical moments from Bulgaria's Liberation. It typically involves participation from historical reenactment groups who use authentic costumes and weapons from the era. These groups demonstrate battles, scenes from the lives of Bulgarian volunteers and Russian soldiers, and significant events related to the Liberation.

The events are often accompanied by a cultural program, including concerts, folk dances, exhibitions, and other initiatives that highlight the importance of the day. Local museums and cultural institutions also organize special exhibitions and lectures dedicated to the Liberation and the history of Preslav.

24th May - day of Bulgarian education and culture and Slavic writing

May 24th is one of the most significant holidays in Bulgaria, known as the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Script. It is celebrated in honor of the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet and the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who developed the Glagolitic alphabet, the first Slavic script. Later, their disciples created the Cyrillic alphabet, which became the foundation for the written language of many Slavic nations.

On the 24th of May people gather at the square of Veliki Preslav to celebrate the day of the Cyrillic alphabet. The program begins with the mayor giving out the honorary citizen award, then it continues with the best teacher and student awards and it finished with a lively concert.

Nature reserve Patleina

Nature reserve Patleina is located 2 km south of Veliki Preslav. It is a large area of land(specifically the forest) maintained by the local municipality. Patleina is the only place in Bulgaria in which you can find the tree ‘div rojcov’. It is very beautiful during spring as it blooms with pink petals.
In the area of the reserve you will find  a monastery which is considered to have been a centre of the Preslav literary school in which Cyril and Methodius's students practiced and learned.

Osmar Rock Monasteries

The Osmar rock monasteries are remarkable religious, cultural and educational monuments from the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. They are located on the steep southern and south-eastern slopes in the area of "Osmar Boaz" of the Shumen plateau, north of the village of Osmar and south-western of the town of Shumen. It is a complex of scattered medieval rock monasteries, churches and monastic cells that were occupied during the XII-XIV century by monks Hesychasts
The monasteries were built in the soft limestone rocks and it is suggested the monks have reached them by rope ladders. Unfortunately limestone walls are susceptible to degradation during the times and this is the reason the cave murals are almost no preserved today.

"Dervisha" nature reserve

The "Dervisha" nature reserve has been declared a protected area for the preservation and protection of the only natural site of the tree species "horse chestnut", a Balkan endemic in Bulgaria, a preserved remnant of a once extensive forest. It is located on both banks of the ravine of the Dervishka river as a narrow strip parallel to the ravine. In the area you will also find a dam used for for amateurish fishing (the cought fish is put back in the water) and a waterfall.
