PETER’S DAY
An animal is sacrificed in honor of Saint Peter, the son of a poor fisherman, who became one of the first disciples of Christ and one of his most devoted followers.
Sanctified apples (usually of the “Petrovki” species) are distributed because St. Peter is appointed as the lord of The Garden of Eden, and he determines who is allowed to pass through the gates of heaven.
This day (depending on the weather conditions) is the beginning or middle of the harvesting season.
