History

Veliki Preslav, also known as Great Preslav, is a historic city in northeastern Bulgaria. It was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 893 to 971 AD. Founded by Khan Omurtag in the early 9th century, it flourished under the reign of Tsar Simeon the Great, who moved the capital there from Pliska in 893.

During its peak, Veliki Preslav was a major cultural, economic, and political center. The city was renowned for its impressive architecture, including palaces, churches, and fortifications, and became a hub of Slavic culture and literature. The Preslav Literary School, established in the city, played a significant role in the development of the Old Bulgarian language and Cyrillic script. Veliki Preslav's prosperity declined after it was captured by the Byzantine Empire in 971. It continued to exist through the Middle Ages but never regained its former significance. Today, Veliki Preslav is an important archaeological site, offering valuable insights into the history and culture of medieval Bulgaria.

Museums

Аrcheological museum "Veliki Preslav"

The Veliki Preslav National Historical and Archaeological Reserve and Museum is located on the remains of the old Bulgarian capital Veliki Preslav. It was founded on October 26, 1906. The museum exhibits parts and objects from the city found during excavations. There are numerous immovable monuments in and around the reserve, and the museum's exposition presents works of Middle Byzantine and Old Bulgarian art.For more information visit the official site.

 

Ethnographic house "Kartalova"

Kartalova house is one of the Revival monuments of Veliki Preslav. The house is not related to certain events in the history of our nation, but presents the traditional rural life of the XIX century and early XX century, as well as the entry of elements of urban life under european influence. It is assumed that the house was built after 1856 by local builders, with local building materials - stone, wood and adobe. The restoration of the house was in 1982. It is located on "Alexandar Stamboliyski" street 60.
